The Multiplication Technique: Multiplying Your Problems Away

Multiplication is a counterintuitive method of problem-solving that involves duplicating the component responsible for a problem and then imagining how it can be changed to offer useful characteristics. In the 1950s, Raymond Bushland and Edward Knipling used this technique to sterilize and multiply male screwworms, which eliminated the screwworm from the US by 1982. Scientists later used the same technique to eradicate tsetse flies in Zanzibar. This environmentally friendly method has no effect on nontarget species and proves that creative problem-solving can work wonders.
